This qualitative test is used to detect presence of free light chains (kappa or lambda) in urine. These proteins are commonly excreted in patients having multiple myeloma. In multiple myeloma, there is excessive production of monoclonal light chains by neoplastic plasma cells. This test is used as an initial diagnostic tool. If test results are positive, serum and urine protein electrophoresis and immunofixation be done to confirm the diagnosis. Positive test results are also seen in Lymphomas, Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Macroglobulenemia and Amyloidosis.
