About Test:

This panel is a test that collects respiratory fluid to help quickly detect infections of the respiratory tract that originate from 17 different viruses, and 3 different bacteria. This panel is recommended as it provides a definitive diagnosis in 3 hours.

Components Included:

This test is used to detect viruses that cause common cold/flu (can lead to fever, cough, runny nose), and conjunctivitis or ‘pink-eye’.

Coronavirus (HKU1, NL63, 229E, OC43):
This test helps detect the different kinds of Coronavirus. Infection coronavirus can cause fever, cough and shortness of breath, and is risky in older people or people with weakened immune systems.

Human Metapneumovirus:
This test detects the human metapneumovirus, which causes lower respiratory tract infections in children and adults. This typically results in bronchitis, heavy breathing, and heavy cough.

Human Rhinovirus/ Enterovirus:
This test detects both the Rhinovirus and Enterovirus. The Rhinovirus is restricted to causing respiratory infections with flu like symptoms, fever, cough and cold. However, the enterovirus normally can also affect the digestive tract, and spread to the nervous system.

Influenza A:
This blood test is used to detect viruses causing influenza A, which is found in birds, and mammals such as humans. Influenza A is extremely contagious, lead to flu like symptoms, and even cause large epidemics.

H1N1 or Swine Flu:
This blood test is used to detect viruses causing H1N1, which is found in pigs, and spreads to humans. H1N1 is extremely contagious, leads to flu like symptoms that get worse over time. The virus can even cause large epidemics, as in 2009.

Parainfluenza (1,2,3,4):
This test detects viruses causing parainfluenza 1,2, 3 and 4 which cause both upper and lower respiratory infections, resulting in bronchitis and severe coughing, pneumonia and even croup (hoarse voice, barking cough, often seen in young children).

Respiratory Syncytial virus:
This blood test is used to detect viruses that lead lower respiratory tract infections.

Bordetella Pertussis:
This test helps detect Bordetella pertussis, which causes whooping cough. This disease is characterized by severe barking cough followed by high pitched inhalation that makes a “whoop” sound.

Chlamydophila Pneumoniae:
This blood test is used to detect bacteria causing common pneumonia infections, that may lead to severe cough, or sometimes milder symptoms.

Mycoplasma Pneumoniae:
This test detects bacteria that cause “walking pneumonia”, which is an atypical pneumonia with much milder symptoms that may not even be noticeable.

About Disease

What is respiratory infection?

When airways inhale bacteria, viruses or fungi, it may lead to respiratory infections, that cause runny noses, blocked airways and severe cough. Some organisms can lead to atypical forms of pneumonia, which is accompanied by dry or no cough. Viral infections, depending on severity, can lead to flu like symptoms. In case of viruses such as H1N1, and H1, the disease might be very contagious, and individuals need to be quarantined immediately.
