Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin which is produced endogenously in the body when suns ultraviolet rays hit the skin.
It is also known as Sunshine Vitamin Or Cholecalciferol . It is hardly present in any food but is readily available as a supplement.
It us used for treating diseases like Osteoporosis or for improvement for overall health.
The problem with Vitamin D whether it is obtained from sunlight or in food or as a supplement is that this Vit D is biologically inert and has to undergo two chemical changes in the body (hydroxylations) for activation.
The first chemical reaction occurs in the liver and converts vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], also known as calcidiol.
The second occurs primarily in the kidney and forms the physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], also known as calcitriol 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test is the best indicator of Vitamin D status in the body.
25(OH)D has a half life of 2-3 week . On the contrary the bioactive hormone is 1,25(OH)2D acting both at the receptor level and by non-genomic mechanisms; its half life is 4-15 hours
