Healthy Diets: Recognizing the Fads and the Necessity

Healthy Diets

A lot has been said over the last couple of decades about the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. There has been a lot of newsprints and digital space that has been invested in promoting the message to embrace dietary fad or another. Every other day there is a new super-food that you must have, and there is always someone or the other who has advice on the best diet for you.

Here are some questions you should keep in mind when you read, or hear, about a particular dietary fad:

  1. How realistic are the goals that the diet sets out for you?
  2. What are the food groups that the diet eliminates?
  3. Does it stress on buying a certain product/produce at a certain store?
  4. Is this going to be a temporary diet?
  5. Does it call for intense changes in your eating patterns?
  6. Does it include exercise as a part of the program? If so, does it keep into consideration the requisite nutrition requirements?

These are just a few questions that can help you identify if a diet is an honest life-long nutrition pattern that you can adopt or just a fad to cash in on an image stereotype. The first step, however, is to identify your own dietary patterns and nutrition requirements. Having the right food, in the right quantities can be both fulfilling and filling at the same time.

Chuck the ‘Say No’ mentality

Denial was never the answer, give yourself a treat, but limit the intake depending upon your medical condition and requirements. One of the biggest mistakes by fad diets is to completely ignore a food group, this mindset completely ignores the natural cravings of a human mind.

It is in situations such as these that someone just off a diet goes on a binge. These binges can be far more harmful than a steady, but the limited intake, of that. Be it chocolates or fried chicken, make sure that you understand your limits and eat within it.

Conduct your own culinary experiments

One of the best ways to indulge in your own gastronomic delights, find yourself a cookbook or tutorial video and cook a healthy version of your favorite recipe. Learn more about salads and whip up your favorite sauces to add a little pizza to your palate.

What dietary fads ignore is the idea that nutrition is all about variety. Having a well-rounded diet that includes your requisite intake of nutrition can be made delicious if you begin cooking your own food.

Consult a qualified physician

Before embarking on any fad diets it is important to consult a qualified physician about it and the projected impact it may have on your body.

Whatever you may eat, if you are not going to be burning the calories and keeping your body active, it is going to accumulate as fat. Diets, more often than not, fail to include or stress upon the importance of exercising on a regular basis.

Exercising regularly changes your nutrition requirements and boosts your metabolic functions as well. This helps both the body as well as mind as it releases mood-elevating endorphins and boosts serotonin levels.
