  1. Myth: You will develop type 2 diabetes if you are obese.

Fact: Obesity is one of the risk factors for developing the disease but other risk factors such as family history, ethnicity and age also play a role. It is not necessary that obese people will develop Type 2 Diabetes. Most people with type 2 diabetes are often at a normal weight or are moderately overweight.

  1. Myth: Too Much sugar consumption causes diabetes

Fact: There are many unknown factors that cause type 1 diabetes and lifestyle factors that triggers type 2 diabetes. Genetics is common for both. Research has shown that drinking sugary drinks is linked to type 2 diabetes.

The ADA recommends the people should avoid intake of sugar sweetened beverages to avoid diabetes. Sugar-sweetened beverages include beverages like:

  • regular soda
  • fruit punch
  • fruit drinks
  • energy drinks
  • sports drinks
  • Other sugary drinks.

Eg) Just one regular soda has about 150 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrate. This is the same amount of carbohydrate in 10 teaspoons of sugar!

  1. Myth: Diabetic people should eat special diabetic foods

Fact: Diabetic people should consume healthy diet. Diabetic people should consume diet which is low in saturated and transfat, moderate in salt, sugar & starchy vegetables, whole grains and fruits. They should avoid special diabetic food since they may contain sugar alcohols which has a laxative effect on the body. Diabetic food does not provide the necessary nutrients required by the body.

  1. Myth: Sweets or chocolates are a complete no for diabetic people

Fact: Diabetic people can have sweets if they have a healthy meal plan or they follow a strict exercise schedule. The key to having sweets is to have it in very small portion or have it only on special occasions followed by a healthy diet.

  1. Myth: Diabetes is a contagious disease

Fact: No, Diabetes is not a contagious disease. Genetic & Lifestyle factors play a part. It can’t be caught like a cold or flu.

  1. Myth: Diabetic people are more likely to get colds and other illnesses.

Fact: Diabetes does not cause people to get cold or other illnesses. But yes, if you are diabetic and if u get a cold or any other illness then it is difficult to control the sugar level. This is because any illness will make it difficult to control diabetes and may progress to more serious complications. Therefore doctors advice diabetic people to get flu shots so that they can avoid unnecessary complications.

  1. Myth: Fruit is a healthy food. So you can eat how much ever you want

Fact: Fruit is a healthy food. It contains fiber and lots of vitamins and minerals. But even fruits should be eaten in appropriate quantities. Diabetic people should avoid few fruits since they contain lot of sugars. Therefore you need to talk to your physician to know which fruits to consume and how much should be the quantity.
