13 Things to keep in mind if you are a Diabetic

You need to take good care of yourself to avoid long term problems. You need to keep your HbA1c, Blood Pressure and cholesterol under check.

  • You need to have controlled healthy food choices like Fruits, Vegetables, fish, dry peas or beans, whole grains, and low fat or skimmed milk.
  • Try to have foods that have less fat and salt.
  • Eat food with more fiber such as whole grains cereals, bread, crackers.
  • Follow a 30 to 60 mins exercise. Brisk walking is a great way to maintain a healthy weight and to manage high blood pressure etc.
  • You need to manage your stress since stress can raise your blood glucose level. Meditation / Yoga is the best way to manage your stress.
  • Stop smoking, drinking alcohol to manage your blood glucose levels.
  • Avoid skipping your medication. Take your medication regularly without fail even if you feel better.
  • You need to have a complete check for any kind of cuts, red spots, and swelling. Call your healthcare provider if you notice any sores that do not go away.
  • Check your Blood glucose level on a regular basis.

  • Any changes in the regular check up report, please bring to the notice of your doctor.

  • Get a Micro albumin/creat ratio done every 6 months to monitor your kidneys for any damage.

  • Diabetic patients are more at risk for nerve damage, which can cause loss of sensation in the feet, leading to other serious complications. Therefore, they have to inspect their foot everyday for any kind of cuts, blisters etc. If you notice any kind of foot problems, please consult your doctor immediately.

  • High blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels in your eye which can lead to diabetic retinopathy. Also it can lead to cataracts and glaucoma, which occur earlier and more frequently in people with diabetes. Therefore you need have a regular eye check up done at least once a year to detect any kind of problem early.
